Kernel 2.6.24 has suport for marvell 88W8385 (wifi chip on lifedrive)

I'm not a great linux guru, but the lack of news or anything from Marex or Miska (of course they have their own life) make me post this to all to remember that maybe this kernel give a tip to get WiFi working on TX/LD.

I really don't want to give up o loss any hope! WiFi on TX will be heaven.

I spoke with Marex and LD

I spoke with Marex and LD doesn't have 8385 but 8305. TX has 8381. So it's different ;-)

wooowww so ... let's put all

wooowww so ... let's put all our hope on Marex and you ;-)
Let's keep praying ....

On Marex only :-T I'm just

On Marex only :-T I'm just his press agent ;-) But he is too busy with school :-(

Jajajaja! Ok, let's hope he

Ok, let's hope he gets good scores on school.
And get the miracle of Wi-Fi done !!!

Cheers miska!

88W8385 = 8381 + a/g
88W8381 = 8305 + TKIP (hardware) 802.11e (QoS) 802.11i (Security) BT coex
can't modify the driver of 8385?

wifi status says nearly done, is true??

saludos from argentina!!

HND kernel is 2.6.21 8385 is

HND kernel is 2.6.21
8385 is in 2.6.24

I wan to try help (don't know if can, but I'll try). I see two roads:
* port HND patches to 2.6.24 and play with libertas module
* backport libertas module from 2.6.24 to hnd's 2.6.21

miska: can you point me some tips/urls about creating build environment and build the kernel ?

thanks ! (gracias totales)

As I said before 8385 !=

As I said before 8385 != 8381. Yes, features are similar, but firmware and internals are different. How to compile kernel - just get any suitable cross-comipler (you can get one from oe, or gentoo has crossdev, or there is some binary package somewhere I don't know) and then compile it as a normal kernel ;-)

One more thing, according to

One more thing, according to the Marex, nearly done in reality means that all that is left is find out how to communicate with it.

how could I help? i don't

how could I help?
i don't know anything about drivers but where could I learn something, isn't there a tutorial or something??

how old are you miska? marex?

If you want to try to write

If you want to try to write some driver, best way to start is to learn C. There is a lot of tutorials all around the web. Other useful thing is to read sources of drivers similar to that one you want to write. And the hardest thing is to find out how the device work. And there is usually no open tutorial. So this is the hard part ;-)

I'm 23, not sure if Marex want to share his age here.

I know C++ :) I'll start

I know C++ :)
I'll start reading some sources

thanks

Would be really cool to get

Would be really cool to get the new Ubuntu for handhelds ported to the Lifedrive

Seems like the damn wifi driver is the main stumbling block still.... damn I hate proprietary crap like BLOBs :(

So Form what I

So Form what I read...throughout the topics...I understand that almost(if not all) applications that work on a Desktop Linux Distribution like Ubuntu, Fedora, Slackware, etc work on Opie on Palm. Am I right?

I would say that any

I would say that any portable enough application can be ported to Palm. You can run X on Palm. So even GUI shouldn't be problem if you are despaired. Only problem can be if it badly written.

Yup. Not enough ROM? Well,

Yup. Not enough ROM? Well, what if you would buy a BIG SD card like 8GB and use some of it as swap?

If I could be of any help with the Wifi driver...just ask.

I am getting a T|X tomorrow. YEEEAAAH.

TX has only 32 MB of RAM. Of

TX has only 32 MB of RAM. Of course, you can use SD card as a SWAP. But swapping in general slows down whole system and it's better not to swap.
