The Palm Wifi thread
Submitted by miind on 22 October, 2007 - 08:07.
Just wanted to start a palm wifi thread. Whould be nice if someone with better knowledge then me could write a small overview of what the status is for wifi driver development for the Lifedrive and the TX.

Lack of wifi support is the
Lack of wifi support is the only thing putting me off from using Linux on my palm TX. Right now it's just fun to toy with for a few minutes, but wifi support would open up a world of opportunities for me.
So, I too would like to know what the situation is with this.
I too am waiting for wifi
I too am waiting for wifi support. Is there any active development on wifi support for the TX or is it never likely to happen?
Thanks,
John H.
The first signs of wifi on
The first signs of wifi on the Lifedrive on this project was about 1.5 years ago.. I lost my faith in this and I guess it will never happen. Dont think anyone is working on it any longer. If I dont remember it wrong I think Marex here made some progress but didnt get it all the way so if someone want to start working on it I guess there is some knowledge that he and maybe others can help with.

I am not besmearing a comprehensive forum but their some thing,
Important yine my need thankings which the knowledge becomes red loves
I, too, am waiting for a
I, too, am waiting for a Wifi/Memory combo SD driver for the Palm (specifically the Z72). I got mine free, so I'm not complaining, but it would be really nice if I didn't have to run the network through my laptop.

Hi folks,
Its been a few months since the news about the 2.6.24 kernel came out, i was wondering if anyone had had a chance to try it with a TX (or LD) yet; and if so, what they had experienced.
(I would but i'm without a running linux box at the moment)

Hi! I'm willing to try the new kernel ... but I got lost on the way trying to download the kernel ... do you have a more concrete link and instructions?

ppl , i need help .. not just mentally , cause so far im working on this by myself i see , i have pulled the firmware file from my palm tx file 8381Fw.pdb and am now reading the output results of that file in hexidecimal , also i have copied ALL files pertaining to wifi from my tx to my desktop and what i wanna do is something similar to ndiswrapper, in fact when i get to that point im hoping to just take there code and install there software to opie n try to make the palm tx driver work , *hoping* not always getting , but it should , in theory , be possible , to make opie recognize pthe driver set that palm uses and make it wrap it , but so far as of the past 2-3 days of work that i have attempted on this ive only so far managed to get to the part wher e i can read palm OS .prc and .pdb files, its 6:32 am and i got class in a few hours , what a way to spend a night .... id like some help , i want to attempt to develop a wifi driver , i need a guy who knows c++ and can help me when i get to that stage ,
anyone ?

spydergt,
I've had a few years of experience in C and C++, and i also own a T|X and want wifi in linux. I am more than willing to dive into the crazy world of soource code that ndiswrapper has created if you think we can legitly modify it for our purposes.

Was just wondering if anyone has been able to build & use Wifi as mentioned here the other day...http://hackndev.com/node/276
I've tried to build a kernel but struck out big time and was just wondering if anyone has had success. Needless to say, I'm anxious to give wifi a try.

Is there anywhere we can download the patched+compiled kernel yet?

dunno, miska has the TX now, he should be preparing some bootpack. LinuxEXPO is on wednesday, it should be ready before that.
Thank you for the
Thank you for the information. I don't have a usable environment for compiling software for a couple more weeks so a bootpack is great news.

Any update on this? I saw the new post discussing the state of things, and I certainly understand that you don't have a ton of people working on this project. So this isn't a post trying to rush you, but just wondering if you have an ETA on a bootpack which includes the WiFi support.
before miska prepares his
before miska prepares his kernel, you can try mine from here:
http://sleepwalker.hackndev.com/release/TX/linux-2.6-arm/partition/2/
remember that I don't use loopbacks so you have to use partition for that. Future builds should support loopbacks.
Hello everyone, Judging by
Hello everyone,
Judging by the timestamp, it appears that some updates have crept into Miska's testing page: http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~miska/testing/
Has anyone tried these images yet?
I've been tinkering with
I've been tinkering with miskas test build this evening and was able to establish a wifi connection. There were, however, a couple of challenges.
1. iwlist eth0 channel revealed that the card only had two channels available - 10 and 11. I was able to make a connection to my router, but only after I switched to one of these two channels. I'll have to see how this plays out when I'm trying to connect to a public ap.
2. The Opie network stuff didn't work for configuration so I did everything from the commandline with iwconfig. I suppose a script or two would make this easier. However, once I did make a connection the network manager did show the ip address and other related info.
3. I wasn't able to set the essid specifically and had to use any. Also, it seems to default to a 1Mb/s connection, but I could change it to 11Mb/s with the iwconfig. That being said I have no idea if these readings were accurate.
4. I was able to establish a connection non-encrypted and with WEP. I didn't try WPA.
I was able to pick-up e-mail(imap), but the app was very slow. Don't know if this was a connection issue, something to do with the app or the fact that my e-mail box had 200 messages in it. Still, I was able to read and delete. It just took some time.
Since I used the opie-large, Konqueror mini was included. While I was able to display a page or two it was extremely slow, and appeared to lock up the TX. Things did evnetually come back.
Those were my initial findings. I'd be interested in seeing what other people run into.

Hi all, Does anyone know
Hi all,
Does anyone know when Miska's release for the TX will be out? I mean the one that was shown at the LinuxExpo?
Thanks!
Hi, on Linux Expo event was
Hi,
on Linux Expo event was used kernel from here http://sleepwalker.hackndev.com/release/TX/linux-2.6-arm/partition/1/ and userspace from http://auryn.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/oe/ (you can grab any new opie-large image).
Unfortunately this kernel has at least 2 problems:
Unfortunately this issue is not fixed yet so that is reason we didn't create next release yet.
Here's my experience with
Here's my experience with the new wifi support for the TX:
1) If you don't see option to dump the firmware in cocoboot you probably have the old version installed on the palm. Delete it from the palm; it's not enough just to delete the old version from the sd card.
2) the libertas*.fw need to be in , /lib/firmware/ (???), and /lib/firmware.
If the firmware files are not in you'll get an error message similar to "cp : cannot stat *.fw". The boot scripts will automatically copy the firmware files to /lib/firmware. Having the *.fw in these two places was not enough for eth0 to become available, I had to put the files in /lib/firmware too, and then I got eth0 and could set everything up. Strangely, once eth0 became available I could delete /lib/firmware, reboot multiple times, and wifi still works.
3) palm's browser is much faster than konqueror. konqueror is actually quite responsive, but it loads things slowly. Is there an alternative to konqueror?
4) here's the script I use to setup my connection
#!/bin/bash
#iwlist eth0 channel #check available channels, only 10 and 11 available
iwconfig eth0 mode managed #not using encrypted connection
iwconfig eth0 channel 10 #use 10, must configure router to 10 also
iwconfig eth0 essid "YourRoutersESSID"
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.99 netmask 255.255.255.0 #192.168.0.99 will be your ip address
route add default gw 192.168.0.1
echo nameserver 192.168.0.1 > /etc/resolv.conf #your nameserver's address is probably different
ping -c 1 example.com &> /dev/null
if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
echo "WiFi is Up";
else
echo "WiFi is Down";
fi
There are several
There are several alternatives to konqueror, but I know none for OPIE.
All channels are available,
All channels are available, it's not my problem the patch I gave to miska wasn't applied.
Proper patch for channels issue will need some work (it's known issue for some CF-slot libertas cards)

Hi Marex,
Can you put up a temporary package with the updated Wifi support for us to test? Thanks!
Hi friends. I recently
Hi friends.
I recently bought a LifeDrive and i saw all the changes that they could do and I really liked, well then I saw your project linux 4palm and I love, I love him, believed no people not just to stand in the barriers some companies make, but going beyond ... really admire them.
Well after the sentimental, I'm sorry, but I was reading in the forums for wifi for the LifeDrive did not know that it has come good and I would also like to know if you can get wifi configure the LifeDrive, if you could from a card sd wifi install some drivers for opie or something ... the truth is that it would ...
Well to tell you thanks for everything you are doing and that although the palm and all these systems is this getting old, do not let that there are people who still believe in what you do.
I´m Spanish so sorry for my English.
